The latest base model of the Kindle includes a 6-inch e-ink screen, has the capacity for around 1,400 books, has Wi-Fi functionality and weighs just six ounces – all for a price of $79.

Meanwhile, the incredibly highly anticipated Kindle Fire sports a 7 inch full color multi touch display, dual core processor, 8GB of storage and Wi-Fi functionality – all for an equally impressive $199.

Apps for the Kindle Fire, which is due to be shipped from mid-November, include Amazon Silk Browser, Amazon Instant Video and the Amazon Cloud Drive for unlimited storage.

Needless to say, Amazon are hoping to grab their own share of the huge tablet PC market, which is currently dominated by the Apple iPad 2 which has shipped a staggering 30 million units during the third-quarter of 2011 alone. Products including the Samsung Galaxy Tab and the Motorola XOOM have attempted to do exactly this over recent months, though have left consumers indifferent due to their $400 to $600 price tags.

HP on the other hand cut the price of their TouchPad 16GB tablet PC from $499.99 to just $99, simply to clear the inventory of a spectacular failure.
