Alcohol during pregancy can cause leukemia
Those children more likely to have chronical myleoid leukemia whose mothers consumed alcohol duing the nine months of pregnancy, French researchers stated.
Dr. Paule Latino-Martel, the director of French Nutrition Centre summed up the last 21 test results of examinations together with his co-workers and drew to a conclusion: drinking during pregnancy increases the risk by 56 percent, that the new born baby may have acute myeloid leukemia.
The risk is the biggest with children younger than four.
The acute myeloid leukemia is a very rare disease, about seven hundred people are diagnosed in the United States with this disease each year. The researchers also pointed out that they didn’t find connection between acute lymphoblastic leukemia – which is more often develops in children’s body – and pregnant women’s alcohol consumption.
Despite of warnings there are still too many women consume alcohol during pregnancy – doctors drew attention. According to surveys in the United States 12%, in Sweden 30% and in France 52% of women drinking alcohol regularly during pregnancy.
