iphone5ph2 Apple iPhone 4S Still America’s Leading SmartphoneThanks to the release of the iPhone 4S, Apple closed 2011 with an extremely strong fourth quarter, as its latest smartphone topped sales charts for three of America’s leading carriers.

Based on a survey led by Mike Walkley of Canaccord Genuity, the iPhone 4S was the leader in terms of sales at AT&T, Verizon Wireless and Sprint for the month of December 2011. The Samsung Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy S2, which have both helped Apple’s South Korean rival to record sales and profits, also posted strong numbers.

Based on the numbers, the iPhone 4S showed without a doubt why the iPhone line is still the most popular smartphone for U.S. consumers. The only factor that prevented the 4S from total dominance was the fact that the fourth carrier surveyed, T-Mobile, still does not offer iPhones to customers.

As such, the Galaxy S2 was the top smartphone for T-Mobile customers, with two HTC phones, the Amaze 4G and Radar 4G coming in second and third. The Galaxy S2 was the second-best seller for AT&T and Sprint subscribers, while its relative, the Galaxy Nexus, took runner-up honors for Verizon Wireless.

According to Walkley’s research findings, the iPhone is expected to move more than 12 million units for the American market in the upcoming quarter. As Apple has also tapped into the Russian and Brazilian markets recently and is also making plans to market the iPhone 4S to Chinese customers this month, figures are expected to increase for the worldwide market.

With regards to the tablet market, the iPad 2 remained the leader as per Canaccord’s statistics, followed by the inexpensive Amazon Kindle Fire at second place.
