Asus Offers GPS Update for Transformer Prime
One of the many issues cited by Asus Transformer Prime users has been the GPS performance, which the company had previously debunked by saying the Transformer Prime tablet is not meant to be a professional GPS device.
However, that may change, as an update for the tablet’s GPS has been made available for download.
So far, there have been mixed reviews on this GPS update. Some sources have mentioned that the update has been working so far, while others are not getting any satisfaction as of yet.
There have also been posts on the XDA Developers site stating that the update would result in an unrooted device. In other words, users who want to ‘mod’ their Transformer Prime would have to think of a way to regain root access somehow. Time will tell whether this update will eventually work for most Transformer Prime users, or whether Asus will have to think of something else to fix their GPS system.
Since the Transformer Prime’s release, there have been many theories as to why the tablet’s GPS performance has been lackluster at best.
Anandtech, for one, pointed out that the aluminum enclosure of the Transformer Prime blocks out radio waves, thus resulting in spotty GPS performance. Other problems documented by users included the encrypted bootloader, which makes it impossible to operate custom ROMs on the device.
After a barrage of complaints, Asus announced that an unlock tool would be made available at the expense of the customer’s warranty. WiFi has been another point of contention, a malady that had resulted in the company offering unsatisfied users either an extended 18-month warranty or a complete refund.
