ASUS Transformer Prime’s Locked Bootloader Faces Intense Criticism
The release of the new Transformer Prime tablet from Taiwanese electronics giant Asus faces with customer backlash following the apparent lockdown of the tablet’s bootloader, disabling users to operate customized software on their devices.
Due to the booloader restrictions, customers are unable to modify their devices and control the software of their Transformer Prime.
Following the popular Transformer device, Asus’ newly-released tablet started dispatching mid-December of 2011 in Asia and is slowly transporting across the West.
Although a great number of Transformer Prime users will be impervious to the locked bootloader, the tablet has begun to become the subject of strong criticism by Android aficionados and developers. These enthusiasts have started to arrange a campaign to force Asus remove the bootloader restrictions, similar to when HTC gave in to the demand against its bootloader policy.
The campaign involves communicating their frustrations on Asus’ North American Facebook page. One Transformer Prime user, Jeremiah Fortier commented, “I bought this device and I demand I be allowed to use it! I will be advising everyone I know that is in the market for a tablet to avoid Asus until something is done.”. Another user remarked that he will only purchase the tablet if Asus would unlock the bootloader.
The launch of Asus’ new tablet has definitely been one with mixed reactions. However, the company is geared to provide an upgrade to the Ice Cream Sandwich OS to resolve issues.
The company has yet to issue a statement regarding the bootloader restrictions.
