Fungus instead of fertilizer
Swiss researchers reported the discovery of a fungus which has the ability to accelerate the pace of the growth of rice.
In the report – which was published by the Lausanne University – authors have claimed that the adaptation of the mycorrhiza fungus may reduce the use of phosphate fertilizers, while it’s “completely natural”. According to the researchers, the fungus may appear in large-scale agricultural production and commercial trade in two to five years.
The group experimented with 20 different fungus spore sample till obtaining the “super fungus”. While some of the spores slowed down the growth of the rice, it was found out that two samples are accelerating the growth pace. As Caroline Angelard – one of the scientists who was involved in the research – has expressed, the background and reasons of the growth is unknown yet.
Trials have started using the mycorrhiza fungus with potato as well.
