Gordon Brown has resigned

Following failed negotiations between the Labour Party and the Liberal Democrats, British Prime Minister, Gordon Brown has resigned.

Today Gordon Brown had a 15 minutes long meeting with Queen Elizabeth II and after that the court formally announced the resignation of the Prime Minister at British local time 19:45 pm – Central European Time 20:45 pm.

Great Britain’s new Prime Minister is going to be David Cameron, the leader of the Conservative Party. Cameron also had a meeting with the queen today to get a mandate to form the new government.

Before Brown went to the Buckingham Palace, he told the journalists, that he will suggest David Cameron for the queen to be UK’s next Prime Minister.  With having tears in his eyes, he added that he is going to resign as a leader from Labour Party with immediate effect.

No coalition yet

Brown – who has previously spent ten years in the Ministry of Finance – took over the leadership of Labour Party and the government after Tony Blairs departure in 2007.

However, after 13 years of governance the Labour Party lost the general elections held last Thursday.

The Tories and the Liberal Party are negotiating since a couple of days, but neither party has made an official announcement about their cooperation yet.

Milband may step forward

Rumours already have been started about who will become the new leader of the Labour Party and according to sources David Milband, the young foreign minister is considered to be one of the favorites.
