iPhone 4S Sends Apple to UK Top Spot for First Time Since Late 2010
Demand for new devices by existing iPhone users pushed the UK market share of Apple to nearly 43% for the month of October, which saw the manufacturer take the lead over Android for the first time since the latter stages of 2010.
According to a key mobile research firm, the release of the iPhone 4S gave Apple a significant boost and saw them reach the top spot, stealing the crown from Android which has been leading the UK field for almost a year now.
A staggering 42.8% of all smartphone sales were taken by Apple, leading to the feat that many had thought to be impossible.
According to those behind the research, the reason for the incredible jump lies in pent-up demand for a new iOS device in existing iPhone users. Had the iPhone 4S or iPhone 5 come along as expected in the late spring or early summer the situation may have been different, but the unusually long delay is thought to have resulted in the unprecedented levels of hype and demand.
Furthermore, it is known that out of all the UK customers who purchased the new iPhone 4S in October, up to 75% were already in possession in a previous version of the iPhone.
Sales of the iPhone 4S continue at an incredible pace the world over even today, with demand outstripping supply and records being broken almost on a daily basis. Unfortunately, analysts have warned that such demand will do nothing other than hinder the arrival of the fabled iPhone 5, as Apple really have very little just cause to hurry with such an ongoing success story.
