Korean Military Talks: No Progress between the Two Sides
On Thursday South Korea’s high level military meeting with North Korea ended without any results or progress, according to the Defense Ministry of Seoul. The South Korean delegation was insisted to North Korea’s apology but the communist regime continuously refused to acknowledge being responsible for sinking a South Korean warship back in March.
It was the first military meeting between the two countries since 2008, however it didn’t bring any breakthrough to cool down the tense relation that is present now.
The military talks between the two sides was held in a border village called Panmunjom and the delegations from both countries opened the meeting with their statements. North Korean representatives have repeteadly denied that their country is responsible for the tragedy of the Cheonan warship which casued the death of 46 sailors. They have also announced, they can’t accept the fact that the international investigation holds North Korea responsible for the tragedy.
Technically South Korean and North Korea are still at war since the Korean War more than 50 years ago ended with a cease-fire agreement and a peace treaty has never been signed. As of today, 28 500 US troops are stationing in South Korea as a legacy of the conflit.
The fact that the sides couldn’t agree on a date for future talks can deepen the crisis even more.
