Mitt Romney Pledges to Veto the DREAM Act

Filed under: The Big Stories |

Presidential candidate of the Republican Party, Mitt Romney vowed to veto the DREAM Act during a campaign stop in Northern Iowa on New Year’s Eve. The DREAM Act offers citizenship to children of illegal immigrants who will go to college or work in the military.

However, Mitt Romney claimed that he would back the granting of residency to the children of illegal immigrants who will serve in the military.

Democratic National Committee (DNC) Senior Advisor for Hispanic Affairs, Juan Sepluveda promptly reacted that Romney’s “far-right views on immigration would make him the most extreme presidential nominee in recent history.

Illegal immigration has become a critical topic during campaigns across Iowa. Although Latinos have been observed to be essential in winning in the election by both the Democrats and Republicans, GOP candidates have asserted to oppose efforts that would allow illegal immigrants any form of permanent residency.

When asked to comment on Texas Governor and fellow Republican Rick Perry’s decision to allow children of illegal immigrants to pay in-state tuition in attending state colleges, Romney said: “For those who come here illegally, the idea of giving them in-state tuition credits or other special benefits I find to be contrary to the idea of a nation of law.”

In December 2010, Republicans in the Senate prevented the attempt of the Democrats to put a version of the bill to the floor for voting.
