New-Look iPhone 5 Might Convince Buyers to Upgrade
With much anticipation building in the air, the Apple iPhone 5 may be seeing a release date in the second, third or fourth quarter of 2012.
As we are still in the first quarter of the year, everything is still speculation so far. Regardless of the eventual release date, there are rumors that the iPhone 5’s design changes will be enough to convince iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S users to get the new handset.
According to Gene Munster, an analyst from Piper Jaffray, the sequel to Apple’s hot-selling iPhone 4 and 4S smartphones will do away with its predecessor’s design in favor of something newer and more innovative. This may be similar to other design rumors circulating, but Munster added an interesting footnote. He mentioned that there may be about 94 percent present iPhone users who will be persuaded to get an iPhone 5 because of the changes to the design.
He did not mention any specific features, but noted a possible “monster upgrade” and projected an August release date.
Aside from discussing the potential design improvements of the new iPhone, Munster saidthat iPhone sales for the fourth quarter of 2011 may be greater than what he initially expected. Given the number of worldwide markets the iPhone is now being sold to, Munster projected 30 million total sales for the recently concluded quarter, up from his previous 26-million projection.
This would represent close to 50 percent of Apple’s total sales for the fourth quarter. Apple will be releasing its official fourth quarter figures on Tuesday, January 24.
