Pakistan cracks down Twitter
Following the ban of Facebook and YouTube recently, the Pakistani Telecommunications Authority continued its actions and took down one of the biggest microblog platform, Twitter.
The authority cracked down Twitter besides around 1000 other websites in order to prevent users from anti-Islamic contents that are regulary get posted on those sites.
The authority stated that they were obliged to do the bans, since they found some insulting content on Facebook regarding prophet Muhammad, called „Everybody Draw Muhammad Day” and also some harmful material were posted recently on powerful video-sharing platform, YouTube.
Now the latest victim of the biggest internet drive in Pakistan is reportedly Twitter, the well known social microblogging platform. Especially younger people in Pakistan got shocked by hearing the news that the authority is taking down Twitter, as they believe this step now is absolutely unnecessary, calling the whole operation as „pure madness” as it’s now. However, the religious groups are welcoming these actions as they think people should be prevented of such outrageous contents.
As Daily News Corner reported yesterday, banning Blackberry smartphone services in the past caused huge dissatisfactions among young people and now once again they are facing with some blockage of many popular online internet services.
Further restrictions, and access limitations are under consideration as well as lifting the ban off some sites.
