Relaxation and family fun at Eagle Lake Park in Largo

Filed under: The Big Stories,Travel |

Eagle Lake Park in Largo is finally having it’s grand opening today, though it may turn out to be bittersweet with the county’s recent budget cutbacks. Among the first visitors to enter the park were Delayne Hiott, owner of Top Cat Appliance Repair of Largo, and his daughter Kaylee. Hiott states “I’ve been riding by here nearly 20 years on my way to and from performing appliance service calls, ever since Kaylee was a little thing. We would park roadside to watch the eagle parents feed their young, as we caught the sweet, citrus filled breeze, and fantasized about reeling in a 10 lb bass from the pond on the other side of the fence.” Kaylee Hiott, now 16, added “Dad and I have many fond memories of eagle watching here. I’ve ridden by here for years with Dad, on our way to service refrigerators, washers and dryers. I’m glad to see a park here instead of a shopping center. If you get a chance to stop by, do so. You’ll be so very glad you did.” The 163 acre park is located at the corner of Keene and Belleair Rd and, named after the bald eagle family that nested in the tall pine trees for many years.

The park has 4 ponds, a playground for the kids, nearly 2000 feet of wooden boardwalk, nature trails, and a dog park. Also open to the public will be the remaining 18 acres of citrus groves, and the original Taylor family home. Pinellas County purchased the land from the Taylors, one of the original families that started homesteading in Pinellas County in the 1850s. The address Eagle Lake Park 1800 Keene Road South.
