Republicans Seeking Higher Taxes for Rich and Social Security to Remain Untouched
Over 50% of Republicans are in agreement that the wealthy should face higher taxes in order to help bring down the overall Federal budget deficit.
Over half of all self-identified Republicans have backed the idea to increase taxes on all households earning more than a total of $250,000, which is a sentiment at odds with the presidential candidates of the party.
At present, for than two thirds of all Americans are known to back proposals for higher taxes on the rich, while even larger numbers believe the Social Security and Medicare should be left untouched.
The report responsible for the recent statistics also suggests that 8 out of 10 Americans believe that the middle classes must be prepared to make sacrifices in order to help cut the deficit, as there is massive opposition to higher taxes for average earning families. While most see a degree of sacrifice as inevitable, the majority support backs higher taxes on those in the wealthier brackets.
A debate set to take place tonight in New Hampshire by Republican candidates will likely address such issues and clarify the full and frank standpoint, which is set to be the first of the current campaign to focus broadly on the economy.
