The 2012 Toyota Camry has a touch of nostalgia and automobile history surrounding it. When the former General Motors Fremont Assembly plant opened in 1984, it was renamed New United Motor Manufacturing Inc. (NUMMI). It closed last year, following a joint venture between GM and Toyota to manufacture both brand named vehicles. GM expected they would be able to obtain guidance from Toyota, regarding, operating on a lean manufacturing basis with an American workforce.

During 1988, the plant began manufacturing the compact Toyota Corolla and 1995 saw them producing the Toyota Tacoma. Between the opening date and May 2010 when closure took place, the plant produced an average of 6,000 vehicles a week. The production lines, aided by robots, built about 8 million cars and trucks during the time of the joint venture.

Following the closure of the plant, among the items salvaged were the production line robots, distributed to other plants such as Georgetown, KY, where the 2012 Toyota Camry is manufactured. Reports further show that the surplus equipment made available in the development of the 2012 Toyota Camry was a fortunate occurrence.

For any one buying a new 2012 Toyota Camry, they should perhaps give a thought to the fact, that without the co-operation between GM and Toyota, the price of the vehicle may have been more. Reports show that a price increase for the 2012 Toyota Camry would have received a negative response in the marketplace, due to recession influences.
