Sony was one of many electronics manufacturers who showed up at this week’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, where they previewed their upcoming Crystal LED television to hundreds of tech observers and insiders.

Sony is hoping this television will serve as a feasible and more affordable alternative than OLED. Unlike other backlit television sets, it features a fully operational LED system. This technology provides close to the equivalent of an OLED-quality picture at a lower price, and is definitely a cut above the average plasma or LCD TV with its HD display. Consumers can expect a sizeable TV screen, as this set would measure a gargantuan 55 inches.

Currently, there is no definite release date for the Sony Crystal LED TV, but rumors are suggesting that Sony’s rival LG is aware of their efforts to release a competitively-priced high-end TV.

LG unveiled their own 55-inch OLED TV this week at the CES, and word out is that they are planning to reduce the suggested price of their model.

Aside from providing consumers with a cheaper option, Sony also has other plans for this TV considering their dismal 2011. The company’s fortunes sagged in the recently concluded year as several products such as the Xperia Play tanked, and Sony TVs in general failed to grab their usual share of the market.
