The invites are out and the rumor mill is a-buzzing. Sony joined several other tech titans in announcing a press event at the 2012 Mobile World Conference (MWC) to be held in Barcelona. This event will be held on February 26, yet it remains anybody’s guess as to what will be the said event’s main talking points.
This comes shortly after it was leaked that Sony may be releasing the Xperia Sola handset for US customers.
Does this mean that the American smartphone market may have more than just the Xperia Ion (on AT&T) to look forward to in the next few months?
A post on the US Patent and Trademark Office’s site reveals that Sony applied for the patent January 30, though its status is still up in the air.
One of the most likely scenarios would be Sony using the event to unveil a ‘hero’ handset of some sorts. Basing on the specifications of the Xperia S and Xperia Ion, such a device may likely include a dual-core processor – courtesy of Qualcomm, we assume – a 12-megapixel camera, near-field communication and a 720p high-definition screen.
Also, the event may be a showcase for three mid-priced Sony handsets scheduled for an April 2012 release. There isn’t much to say yet about these three devices, except for their brand names (Kumquat, Nypon and Pepper) and expected release date.
All things considered, Sony seems to be playing their cards close to their chests, and the best thing to do is to stay tuned for more MWC updates as the picture slowly gets clearer. We shall definitely report on these updates as they come.
