Sony to Strengthen Its Position in the 3D World
There have been many attempts at popularizing 3D technology, starting in the 50’s. The reason for that is always to gain a competitive edge. Sony stated at the IFA consumer electronics expo in Berlin that they have intentions of covering the 3D market with a wide new range of 3D compatible consumer electronic products such as 3D compatible LCD TVs, 3D compatible Blu-ray disc players with theater systems. Sony plans to introduce these products later this year.
Previously Sony released a firmware update that allowed the PlayStation 3 to accommodate 3D games, but for some reason the 3D movie playback was not included. Sony CEO Howard Stringer has not committed to a definite date for the release of the playback firmware, but stated it’s scheduled to be released in October.
At this time, Sony has sold more than 37 million PlayStation 3 consoles around the world. By adding the 3D Blu-ray playback functionality to the PS 3, it will significantly enlarge the medium market for 3D Blu-ray movie sales and increase the sales of PlayStation 3 gaming systems. This move may also give Sony a leg up in the competition with Microsoft Xbox and Nintendo Wii. Stringer also said that in addition to being able to play the 3D movies, future updates will allow PlayStation 3 to display 3D photos.
The upcoming Sony digital cameras, such as the Cyber Shot DSC-TX9 will play 3D YouTube videos which we’ll be emerging this year and make PlayTV broadcasts three-dimensional.
In this media frenzy world, Sony is presently in the forefront of the 3D market and intends to accelerate their efforts to create a rose colored 3D world that will encompass games, movies and electronics.
