Spanish prime minister, José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero urged a “solid and strong” EU policy in the Gaza strip blockade case, following a meeting on Saturday in Madrid with Palestine president, Mahmoud Abbas.

After the meeting, at the press conference Zapatero said, that the EU should adopt such policy due to the humanitarian situation that evolved in the Gaza strip. Zapatero added, that Spanish foreign minister, Miguel Ángel Moratinos will propose his colleagues in the EU to make it clear: they want to lift the blockade in Gaza.

On Monday, the Spanish proposal -which was submitted on the EU foreign ministers’ meeting in Luxembourg – labelled the Israeli blockade as “unacceptable, which caused the opposite effect, yet from Israeli point of view”. Therefore EU urges to introduce a “new mechanism” for checking the goods heading to the Gaza strip.

Zapatero expressed his confidence that European countries will support his initiation, same as special envoy, George Mitchell’s efforts from White House to restore confidence between Israel and Palestine.

Mahmoud Abbas phrased his satisfaction about EU’s role and political position regarding the blockade case. The Palestinian president confirmed that he doesn’t intend to proclaim unilaterally the Palestinian state within a year, even that peace negotiations with Israel have stuck.
